BASN Women’s Hoops Notebook

UConn HuskiesCONNECTICUT — It is now December. The women’s basketball season isn’t close to being half over. There is one dominant team. Only one. Just ask coaches from throughout the country who have seen most of the top teams.

If they stay healthy, they will win the National Championship. One injury. It wouldn’t matter. Too much depth. The team is UConn. They have beaten Stanford by 12, Duke by 26 and ODU by 43. And those were the close games.

One coach told me that UConn was deeper than any Tennessee team in history. Not necessarily more talented 1 through 5 but deeper. And he knows Tennessee.

He also told me that if the contenders lost a player this season they would be done. Rutgers lost Essence Carson against St. Joseph’s. A five point win over a much undermanned team.

He told me that if Candace Parker went down then Tennessee would go down. LSU couldn’t afford to lose star center Sylvia Fowles. Maryland is the only team in a position to compete with UConn depth wise but the coaching is not comparable. Duke, North Carolina and Texas do not have the talent, experience or depth.

UConn has to play at LSU, North Carolina at home and Rutgers probably three times and will have to beat Tennessee to win a National Championship. No way is the NCAA going to let UConn and Tennessee to wait for the National Championship game.

They will meet in the semis if at all. They don’t want to risk UConn and Tennessee not making it to the finals together. Remember a few things. Star player Maya Moore is only a freshman.

She certainly will get better this season. No player on the team is averaging more than 30 mpg. That will help them fatigue wise during the season and in the NCAA’s.

Mel Thomas is shooting better than ever. Tina Charles is a dominant center. Renee Montgomery is as good as they come at the guard position.

Charde Houston is not playing that well but UConn really does not need her and she should improve during the season. Auriemma will not say it but this may be his best team ever.

We will know more in March, but UConn could be undefeated going into the NCAA’s. They have been there before. No one in this group has ever won a National Championship.

That should make them even hungrier. Watch out Huskie opponents because perhaps Pat Summitt is better off not playing UConn at all this season.
