NEW YORK — With just three weeks left in the regular football season for most HBCU schools, the race for conference titles is slowly winding down. Two of the teams in this week’s BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Poll have already clinched berths in their respective league title games.
For the fourth straight week, the Hornets of Delaware State (8-1) got all nine first-place votes and are still the top team in black college football. The leaders of the MEAC survived another nail biter last weekend as they outlasted Winston-Salem State.
Grambling State (8-1) is second, followed by SIAC leading Tuskegee (9-0) at number three. Two other SWAC schools, Alabama A&M and Southern (both 7-2) are tied for fourth with 48 points each.
With their win over Alabama State, Rod Broadway’s Tigers have clinched a berth in the SWAC Championship Game at Birmingham on December 15th. It’s GSU’s second title berth in the last three years. Over the last two seasons, Broadway led N.C. Central to back-to-back CIAA crowns.
The second five consists of Jackson State (6-3) at number six, Norfolk State (7-2) is seventh, Virginia Union (9-1) is eighth, and Albany State (8-2) sits at number nine. This week’s new entry into the top 10 is Shaw (7-3) who debuts at No. 10.
The Bears will meet VUU in Saturday’s CIAA Championship Game in Charlotte. Shaw, who was picked to finish fourth in the West in the league’s preseason poll, will be looking for their second championship in three years, after last winning it all in 2004.
That same season, Virginia Union went 2-8 under first year head coach Arrington Jones. The last time the Panthers won the CIAA football title was in 2001, when it defeated Winston-Salem State 31-24.
Other key HBCU games this Saturday include No. 7 Norfolk State at No. 1 Delaware State; No. 6 Jackson State at Prairie View A&M; George Mason at No. 3 Tuskegee; No. 4 Alabama A&M at Alcorn State; No. 4 Southern at Arkansas-Pine Bluff; and Louisiana-Monroe hosts No. 2 Grambling State.
