NEW YORK — For the first time this season, a new team sits atop the HBCU Top Ten Football Poll. Following their 21-2 victory over conference foe Alabama State, the undefeated Jaguars of Southern University (5-0) are now the top Black College football team in the land.

Pete Richardson’s bunch received seven of a possible eight first-place votes in this week’s poll. Last week’s No. 1 team, Hampton University, received the other first place vote. Delaware State (3-1), who knocked off the Pirates last Saturday 24-17, is second followed by HU (3-1), Alabama A&M (4-1), and Alabama State (4-1).

The Hornets, who haven’t won a MEAC football crown since 1991, will get this week’s HBCU action started on Thursday night when they host conference foe Bethune-Cookman. The game will be seen on ESPNU at 7:30 pm ET. That battle is just one of two key games matching teams from the top five.

On Saturday night in Baton Rouge, Alabama A&M will visit Southern in a key SWAC contest at A.W. Mumford Stadium. The Jags’ Homecoming game will be seen regionally on Cox Sports Television at 8:30 pm ET. That same night, Alabama State travels to Mississippi to meet Jackson State.

The remaining teams in this week’s poll includes SIAC leading Tuskegee (4-0) at number six, South Carolina State (2-2) at seven, Virginia Union (5-0) is eighth. The newest team in this week’s poll, Grambling State (3-1), debuts at number nine, and Albany State (4-1) rounds out the poll at No. 10.

The Golden Tigers will battle Morehouse College Saturday afternoon (2 pm ET) in the 72nd Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic at Columbus, Ga. Other key games this week include Hampton taking on Princeton of the Ivy League, Johnson C. Smith visits Virginia Union, and South Carolina State visits Norfolk State.

After last week’s action, there could be another major shakeup in next week’s poll.
