Asked the reason for his decision, Moss replied, “It is just that we think the program needs to head in a different direction. We aren’t getting to where we thought we should be and needed to make a change.”

Jones, in a statement released by the university, thanked the school for giving him the opportunity to coach in Division I.

“We didn’t get it done and that is the reality of the coaching profession,” Jones said. “I will be looking for another coaching opportunity.” Moss, in the statement, praised Jones as a “master recruiter who has brought in students who are good people with good skills and great potential.” However, Moss said, “A change is necessary for our men’s basketball program to be competitive with the level of play in the MEAC.” His teams were 12-16 and 12-17 overall and 11-7 in each of his first two seasons in the MEAC.

The Spartans were picked to finish second in the league this season by other MEAC coaches. Some national magazines had them as the league favorite.

Jones, however, several times said privately in recent weeks he did not feel he had the support of Moss, who had hired him only three months after becoming athletic director.

Jones had coached under Moss at the University of the District of Columbia, where his 1983 team won the Division II championship and was the national runner-up in 1984.
