NEW YORK — For the second straight week, there’s a new school sitting atop the HBCU Top Ten Football Poll. The Hornets of Delaware State, tied with Norfolk State for the top spot in the MEAC (4-1, 3-0), are this week’s No. 1 team in black college football.

Coming off a 24-17 home win against Bethune-Cookman last Thursday, DSU (88 total points) got eight first-place votes in this week’s poll. Hampton (4-1, 3-1 MEAC), ranked second in the poll, received the other first-place vote. The Pirates’ lone loss came against the Hornets just two weeks ago.
Both schools will be facing conference foes on the road this weekend. The Hornets will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on the Aggies of A&T (0-6, 0-3 MEAC), who have the nation’s longest current losing streak at 22 straight. DSU has won the last three meetings against A&T.

The Pirates will travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on the Spartans in the annual “Battle Of The Bay” at Dick Price Stadium. NSU, who debuts in this week’s poll at No. 8, leads the all-time series 22-21-1. However, the Spartans haven’t defeated Hampton since a 28-20 home win in 2001.

The rest of this week’s top five includes Alabama A&M (4-1) third, last week’s No. 1 Southern (5-1) in fourth and the undefeated Golden Tigers of Tuskegee (5-0) at No. 5. The Jags will try to bounce back from their loss to the Bulldogs when they host Jackson State. Tuskegee, the top team in the SIAC, hosts Stillman. AAMU is idle.

The remainder of the top ten has Grambling State (4-1) rising from ninth to sixth, Virginia Union (6-0) registers at No. 7, the aforementioned Spartans of Norfolk State debut in the eighth spot, Albany State (5-1) is ninth, and Alabama State (4-2) dropped from the fifth spot to 10th.

The Panthers rolled up a season-high 404 rushing yards in their 30-17 win over Johnson C. Smith Saturday at Charlotte. The 6-0 mark is VUU’s best start since 1990. They’ll take on defending CIAA Eastern Division champion Elizabeth City State Saturday at Hovey Field in an important divisional match up.

In other games matching teams from the BTRC/BASN poll: Grambling State travels to Little Rock to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Delta Classic 4 Literacy; Clark-Atlanta host Albany State; and Alabama State hosts Prairie View A&M at Montgomery.
