Poll Shows Little Change

Updated: October 29, 2007 Logo NEW YORK — While all the major conference races start to heat up in black college football, not much has really changed within this week’s HBCU Top 10 Football Poll.

The top spot has not changed in the last three weeks. Delaware State (7-1) remains the unanimous choice as the top team in the land. The Hornets escaped Orangeburg, S.C. this past Saturday as they nipped South Carolina State.

For the second straight week, the No. 2 and 3 teams in the poll flip-flopped. SWAC division leaders Alabama A&M (5-1 in the East) and Grambling State (7-0 in the West), both 7-1 overall, are second and third respectively this week.

The Bulldogs are tied with Jackson State for the top spot in the East. They’ll host the Tigers (5-3 overall) in a showdown Saturday afternoon. GSU travels to Montgomery Saturday to battle Alabama State (4-4, 3-4).
SIAC leader Tuskegee (8-0) and Southern (6-2) make up the rest of the top five. The Golden Tigers (6-0 in SIAC), who have clinched at least a share of the conference crown will host Clark Atlanta Saturday.

The rest of the top ten includes Norfolk State (6-2) at No. 6, Albany State (7-2) seventh, Virginia Union (8-1) eighth, and Jackson State is ninth. Following their 25-22 win over Lane College, Fort Valley State (8-2) cracks into the top 10 for the first time this season.

The Wildcats will meet Albany State in the 18th Annual Fountain City Classic at Columbus, Ga. The 2 pm game will be seen on the NFL Network. NSU dropped from fourth to sixth following their home loss to Howard. They’ll look to bounce back this weekend in Baltimore against Morgan State.

In other key games this weekend: Texas Southern hosts Southern in Houston; Virginia Union travels to Fayetteville State; and Delaware State travels to Winston-Salem State for the Rams’ homecoming contest.
