ASU’s Dillon, GSU’s Eugene Lead SWAC Preseason Football
NEW YORK, NY— Alabama State linebacker, Ronald “Rock” Dillon and Grambling State quarterback Bruce Eugene were picked SWAC Preseason Players of the Year for Defense and Offense, respectively. Alcorn State and Southern were picked to win their respective Eastern and Western division races. The 2004 SWAC voting panel, consisted of football coaches, sports information directors and selected SWAC Media. Bruce Eugene (5-10, 255 lb), a senior quarterback from New Orleans, LA has passed for nearly 9,000 yds (84 TDs) in three seasons at Grambling State. He has been a finalist for I-AA’s Walter Payton award for three seasons and already holds most of Grambling State’s passing records. Eugene has led the NCAA (I-AA) in Total Offense for the past two seasons.
Ronald “Rock” Dillon (5-11, 190), is a senior linebacker from Memphis, TN and is the anchor of the Alabama State defense. Last season, he led the SWAC in tackles (105), sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (18).
Southern running back Kenneth Peoples was the top vote getter, garnering 23 of 24 possible votes. Dillon picked up 22 of 24 votes while Alabama A&M offensive lineman Robert Louis, Bruce Eugene and Southern defensive back Jarmaul George picked up 21 of 24 votes.
The voting for predicted order of finish was close in both divisions as Alcorn State edged out Alabama State 106-104 in points by the voters predicting the East winner. The same vote totals came in the West predictions, with Southern edging out Grambling State 116-114.
Alcorn State had ten (10) players selected to the preseason team, followed by Grambling State and Southern with eight (8) players. Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jackson State had six (6) honorees. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State pulled three (3) selections each, with Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern getting one (1) player each named to the 2004 preseason team.
