NEW HAVEN, Ct.— For the second straight week, the Hampton Pirates are sitting atop the BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll. However, the gap between the top two teams in black college football is thinning.
Hampton (2-0, 67 points) received four of seven first-place votes compared to second-ranked Alabama A&M (3-0, 65 points), who jumped one slot from last week. Both teams are coming off huge conference wins and will be featured on national TV later this week.
The Pirates, who got a career-high 154 rushing yards from Van Morgan in their win at North Carolina A&T, will host Morgan State Thursday night at Armstrong Stadium. The game will be seen live on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Saturday night, the Bulldogs will visit Eddie Robinson Stadium to take on Grambling State in a key SWAC battle. The game, a 6 pm ET start, will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on ESPNU at 10 pm ET.
AAMU improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1966 in their win against Mississippi Valley State Saturday night. It’s also the first time the Bulldogs have scored over 40 points in three straight games to start a season.
The largest move in this week’s poll was made by Pete Richardson’s Southern University Jaguars (3-0), who went from sixth to third in the latest poll. Alabama State (3-0) and Delaware State (2-1) round out the top five.
The Jags, who outlasted Prairie View A&M 12-2 Saturday night, host battle non-conference foe Tennessee State at A.W. Mumford Stadium. This game will be seen regionally on Cox Sports Television.
The bottom five of this week’s poll includes South Carolina State (1-2), who dropped from fourth to sixth, Tuskegee (2-0) remains seventh, and Virginia Union (3-0) jumps up from ninth to eighth.
North Carolina Central (3-1) makes its debut in the poll at number nine with Albany State (3-1) rounding out the top ten. In a rematch of last year’s CIAA Championship Game, the Eagles outlasted Elizabeth City State 18-10 in the New York Urban League/Whitney Young Classic at Giants Stadium.
After an season-opening loss to Albany State, NCCU has won three straight. They’ll travel to Greensboro, N.C. to meet North Carolina A&T in the annual “Aggie-Eagle Classic” on Saturday.
Other key games matching teams in the BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll this weekend include Alcorn State at Alabama State, South Carolina State hosts Winston-Salem State, and Tuskegee hosts Fort Valley State.
