Hampton Remains No. 1 in BoxToRow.com / BASN Football Poll

NEW HAVEN, Ct. — For the third straight week, Hampton University is the No. 1 team in the latest BoxToRow.com/BASN HBCU Top 10 Football Poll. The only difference this time, the unbeaten Pirates (3-0) are a unanimous choice as the top black college football team in the country.

Joe Taylor’s bunch, who survived to defeat Morgan State in overtime last week, received all eight first place votes (80 points total) to remain atop the poll. Southern (3-0) moves up one spot from third to second (68 points) followed by Delaware State (2-1, 55 points) and Alabama State (4-0, 44 points) respectively.

Alabama A&M (3-1) and South Carolina State (2-2) are tied for fifth, with both schools garnering 38 points. The remaining teams in the poll include Tuskegee (3-0) at seven, Albany State (3-1) moves from 10th to eighth, Virginia Union (4-0) drops from eighth to ninth, and North Carolina Central (4-1) goes down one slot from ninth to 10th.

A brief peek at this weekend’s upcoming match ups could make for some major changes throughout next week’s poll. In the MEAC, Hampton will host Delaware State at 1 pm. The Hornets, who were idle this past weekend, have lost 11 of their last 12 meetings against the Pirates. Their lone win came at Dover in 2005.

In the SWAC, Alabama State meets Southern in the 34th Annual Gulf Coast Classic in Mobile. Both teams are coming off home wins. SU defeated Tennessee State 41-34 while ASU knocked off 28-25 Alcorn State The battle of unbeatens will seen be seen at 2:30 pm on ESPNU.

Other key games this weekend include Texas Southern at Alabama A&M; Albany State hosting Benedict College; Saint Augustine’s at Virginia Union; and N.C. Central hosting Presbyterian.
