Gugu Zulu Claims Class A5 National Rally Title
SOUTH AFRICA — “This is the most fantastic feeling, finally a national championship title!” enthuses Gugu Zulu, the newly-crowned class A5 national rally champion. “It feels like this has taken forever, its been hard work and I’m glad its finally happened.”
Zulu has been campaigning for the class championship, finally claiming the title in his fifth year in this class. Every season of competition has seen Zulu’s race craft improve — to the point where he is now a dominant force in the A5 class behind the wheel of his BP Volkswagen Citi Golf.
This championship victory makes Gugu Zulu the first rally competitor of color to win a national championship title. The national arena is a challenging environment and only the best can succeed. Zulu is quick to pass credit on to his teammates, crew and supporters.
“There are so many people that have helped to make this happen,” says Zulu. “I’ve received support from my team, BP Volkswagen and also a number of navigators, especially Carl Peskin who was sitting beside me when I won the title.”
The Osram Rally, held in theFree State on August 17 and 18, was the scene of a class win for Zulu and his national title victory. Zulu and Peskin have won five of their six rallies together — the exception being the Zulu Rally in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Here the duo were well on the way to victory when they suffered a breakdown between the end of the final stage and the check in to parc ferme. Five out of six is no mean feat for any team — for a driver and navigator who are still relatively new to each other its an incredible achievement.
The 2007 season is Peskin’s first full national rally championship season. This makes a national championship title between the duo a reward for serious effort this season.
With the class A5 title under his belt, Zulu will continue in the campaign to show he is a serious competitor in the national series, competing under the BP Volkswagen rally banner.
