Tragedy Strikes The Heart Of The Caribbean Surf World
CALIFORNIA — Sad news came in Wednesday from Trinidad. Caribbean surfer Jason Apparicio has fallen ill. The European born, Jason is known for his natty dreads and his free style surfing in the water.
Jason has appeared in numerous ad campaigns and surf journals everywhere. It is in Trinidad that Jason sharpens his skills.
The SATT (Surfing Association of Trinidad and Tobago) held their first “Surfer of the Year” event at San Souci,W.I. back on March 25, 2007. Jason was reported “not feeling himself”.
His performance began to fade during the final, shortly after blowing up the semis. He was subsequently taken to the hospital. Jason took home third place in this competition despite becoming ill.
The culprit? It seems while on a photo shoot in Senegal for his sponsor “Insight”, Jason contracted Hepatitis A and has been hospitalized.
I recently spoke with Jason about his trip. He was super “psyched” about his new sponsorship with Insight and his music. “I just got back from Africa, Morocco and Senegal. I was really good and I am also going to Australia and Bali in a month with my new sponsor Insight”, saidApps, as he is known is to his friends.
If health prevails he will join fellow surf team members, Kai Otton, Luke Stedman, Warren Smith, Jared Mell and Made Lana for a new Insight campaign.
Jason is also an accomplished musician He is also a drummer in a reggae/rock band “The Nylon Lion Pool”. His music can be heard on the band’s MySpace page.
Warren Rostant, President of SATT says, “A benefit is being held tonight to help offset Jason’s medical bills and donations are appreciated”. A PayPal account has been set-up for donations from the US and abroad at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Well wishes to Jason “Apps” Apparicio and his family at this time.
