FATHER SON TEAM SOARS

HIGH THEN HIGHER Mike Conley Sr MIKE CONLEY SR. 15 YEARS AGO

Three Freshman members of Ohio’s State

almost Champion basketball team will

enter the NBA Draft most likely

( more on that tomorrow )

all three ‘represented’ by

One Mike Conley Sr.

That is today’s story. Mike Conley Sr.’s impressive success first as an athlete before he was Mike SR. and now as a businessman in Chicago. Being a Leader of the so far successful effort to bring the 2016 Olympics to his Windy City. Mr. Conley is also about to embark on s new venture representing 3 very promising NBA prospects one of them Mike JR. another yes Greg Oden..

Back to that Windy City reference and Mike Conley’s days as a star track & field athlete. Chicago is not the only Windy City and there in lies a tale of Mike Conley the Elder’s greatest achievement. His specialty was the Triple Jump. He won the Triple Jump Gold Medal in 1992 in Barcelona.

More to the point. Conley is one of only 4 humans to ever jump more than 18 meters. The Wind at his back that day is widely credited with assisting him. Even more Mike was Olympic and Word Champion in the event in his time. In college at the University of Arkansas, Conley won 16 NCAA long jump and triple jump titles.

To this day he holds the U.S. indoor triple jump record.

No slouch in Basketball either. Conley was a very competitive player in both high school and college hoops. Among his achievements on the Hard Wood he won Footlocker’s Celebrity Slam Dunk Contests in 1988, 1989, and 1992 after his more active Bball days were behind him. As his son now follows in his father’s basketball footsteps and takes it further than his father ever did.

Currently as executive director of World Sports Chicago Conley had made himself into a major player in the business of sports in Chicago his hometown. Now Conley is being given a lot of the credit for Chicago being chosen as the American entrant in the competition for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

While no one seems to be giving odds yet on the likelihood of Chicago being awarded the 2016 Games by the IOC they are probably in a strong position because of the importance of the American marketplace to the Olympic “industry” combined with the fact that Atlanta was the last American Summer venue back in 1996. Which means in 2016 it will be 20 long years since the USA was selected as the Summer Olympics site. Bet on Chicago winning !

Here is an intriguing thought

might Mike Conley Sr. become

the first African American

to direct an Olympics held

in an American city

it’s about Time
