HBCU Hoop Players Of The Week

NEW YORK — Here are this week’s HBCU men’s and women’s basketball players of the week as chosen by the four major black college conferences for the games through February 11th.

Men’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Tywain McKee, Coppin State.
McKee scored 25 points, three rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals in a conference win over Norfolk State last week. McKee shot 75 percent form the field (9-of-12), was 50 percent (1-of-2) from behind the arc and shot 67 percent (6-of-9) from the free-throw line. This is the second time that McKee has earned Player of the Week honors this season.
Rookie Of The Week: Mike Freeman, Hampton.
Freeman matched his career-high 23 points, including 21 second half and overtime points in a win over Florida A&M. Freeman averaged 17.5 points and five rebounds, while shooting 72 percent on 13-of-18 from the field. This is Freeman’s sixth Rookie of the Week honor.
Women’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Rashida Suber, Coppin State.
Suber recorded 22 points, one rebound, one assists and two steals, while shooting 61 percent (8-of-13) from the field and 50 percent (3-of-6) from behind the arc to help the Lady Eagles win their 10th straight victory and improve to 11-0 in MEAC play. This is the second time this season that Suber has earned Player of the Week accolades.
Rookie Of The Week: Selena Galloway, Delaware State.
Galloway posted 23 points, three rebounds, and four steals in two conference wins last week. Galloway has scored in double-digits in her last three games and has helped DSU to a 6-2 record since becoming the starting point guard.

Men’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Nicholas King, Saint Augustine’s.
In two games, King averaged 28.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg., two apg., and a steal. His best game came on February 8th when he poured in a career-high 35 points, 6 rebounds and an assist in a 116-104 loss to Bowie State.
Rookie Of The Week: Jerry Hollis, J.C. Smith.
Hollis has been named the league’s rookie of the week for the seventh time this season. He’s averaging 12.1 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. His best performance this week was a 12 point, four rebound, and one block outing against St. Paul’s College.
Women’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Laquanda Williams, N.C. Central.
Williams averaged 22.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per game in three contests during the week. On Feb. 8, 2007, Williams scored a career-high 27 points and added six rebounds in a 63-56 win over the Virginia Union University Lady Panthers. Since Williams joined the team in late December, NCCU is 13-1.
Rookie Of The Week: Jori Nwachukwu, N.C. Central.
Nwachukwu averaged 11.7 points and 13 rebounds per game during three NCCU wins last week. In her best outing, the 5-10 forward recorded 19 points and 17 rebounds at Livingstone College, resulting in her sixth double-double of the season. This is Nwachukwu’s fifth CIAA Rookie of the Week honor.
Men’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Kenny Jones, Kentucky State.
Jones averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in Thorobred wins over LeMoyne-Owen and Miles. His best game was a 22 point, nine rebound, two steal performance against LeMoyne-Owen on February 8th.
Women’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Rishuandra Gartrell, Tuskegee.
Gartrell averaged 12.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 3.0 assists in three games this week in loss to Paine and wins over Fort Valley State and Albany State. Her best game was a 10 point, 20 rebound, three steal performance in win over FVSU on February 8th.

Men’s Honors
Player Of The Week: Chris Moore, Texas Southern.
Moore averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in TSU’s road games against Jackson State and Grambling State. He scored a career high 29 points in the overtime win against JSU, while pulling down 11 rebounds for his sixth consecutive double-double. He has 12 on the season.
Newcomer Of The Week: Brian Ezeh, Prairie View A&M.
In two games, Ezeh averaged 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and one assist. In the Panthers’ first conference win of the season against Alabama State he was five-of-six from the free throw line in the final two minutes of the contest. Ezeh helped to seal the victory by scoring three of Prairie View’s final four points.

Women’s Honors
Co-Players Of The Week: Shelita Burns, Jackson State and Ashley Robinson, Mississippi Valley State.
Burns averaged 14.5 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals 56-52 win over Texas Southern and a 77-66 victory over Prairie View A&M. She also recorded her 8th double-double of the season against the Lady Panthers (19 points, 10 rebounds). Robinson averaged 11.5 points, eight rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.5 bpg., in the Devilettes 51-44 loss to Alcorn and their 61-58 victory over Southern Univ.
Newcomer Of The Week: LaSharee Christian, Jackson State.
