HBCU Hoop Players Of The Week

NEW YORK — Here are this week’s HBCU men’s and women’s basketball players of the week as chosen by the four major black college conferences for the games through February 4th

Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Jahsha Bluntt,Delaware State.

Bluntt averaged 19.5 points, while shooting 58-percent from the field, in two conference wins for the conference leading Hornets (9-1) last week. Against Coppin State , Bluntt scored 23 points and registered 6-of-9 three-pointers from behind the arc including five rebounds and two assists. In addition to shooting 66-percent (8-of-12) from three-point range in both games, Bluntt shot perfectly from behind the charity stripe recording 9-of-9 baskets.

Rookie Of The Week: Matt Pilgrim, Hampton.

Pilgrim poured in a career-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc in the Pirates’ win against North Carolina A&T. He also grabbed six rebounds and matched his season-high with three steals. He finished the week shooting 65-percent from the field, 83-percent from three-point range and averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. This is Pilgrim’s third Rookie of the Week honor.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Latricia Jones, Morgan State.

Jones averaged a double-double of 15.5 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 81 percent from the field in two games last week. Jones recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She followed with a game and career-high 20 points in 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds against Winston-Salem State.

Rookie Of The Week: Marke Freeman, Florida A&M.

Freeman recorded 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists on 7-of-13 shooting to help the Lady Rattlers to a conference win over Norfolk State last week. Freeman has scored in double-digits in seven of the last eight games for Florida A&M. This is the third time this season that Freeman has earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Antonio Fitzgerald, Saint Augustine’s.

Fitzgerald led the Falcons to key wins over two regionally-ranked teams. He scored a career-high 37 points against Virginia State, ranked fourth in the region.He dropped in 20 points in a big win over Virginia Union, ranked second regionally and 20th in the Division II national poll.

Rookie Of The Week: Tremain Holloway, N.C. Central.

Holloway came off the bench for his first action of the game with 13 minutes left and the Eagles trailing by 12 points against heavily-favored Virginia State. He hit all five of his field goals for a season-high 12 points and, with his team down by two and the clock ticking down, set a screen that freed up Chris Mayshack for the game-winning three-pointer.

Coach Of The Week: Thomas Hargrove, Saint Augustine’s.

Coach Hargrove led the Falcons to key wins over two regionally-ranked teams, Virginia State, ranked fourth in the region and Virginia Union, ranked second regionally and 20th nationally. It was the Falcons’ first win over the Panthers since 2002.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Celeste Trahan, Elizabeth City State.

In three games, Trahan averaged 24.6 points, 2.3 assists, two steals, two blocks. Her best game was a 32 point, 17 rebound, 6 assists, 3 steal and 5 block performance in a win over fayetteville State.

Rookie Of The Week: Jori Nwachukwu, N.C. Central.

In two games, Nwachukwu averaged 16 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and an assist. Her best game was a 20 point, eight rebound, one assist and two steal performance in a 68-55 win over Johnson C. Smith.

Coach Of The Week: Tara Owens, Elizabeth City State.
Coach Owens and the Lady Vikings went 3-0 this week defeating Bowie State, Fayetteville State and Shaw University. ECSU ended win streaks for both Bowie State (4 games) and Shaw University (7 games) and with their 19 point win over Fayetteville State, avenged their only CIAA loss of the season.
Men's Honors

Co-Players Of The Week: Roderick Hill, Fort Valley State and Kenny Jones, Kentucky State.

Hill averaged 13.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists in FVSU’s wins over Miles, LeMoyne-Owen and Clark Atlanta. Jones averaged 24.0 points 9.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots in three games. The Thorobreds went 1-2 for the week.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Takesha Riggs, Fort Valley State.

Riggs averaged 21.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals FVSU’s wins over Miles, LeMoyne-Owen and Clark Atlanta.

Men’s Honors

Co-Players Of The Week: Stanford Speech, Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State’s Juan Wyatt.

In two games, Speech averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, an assist, and an steal. Wyatt averaged 23.5 points and 10.5 rebounds during that same span.

Rookie Of The Week: Grant Maxey, Jackson State.

In three games, Maxey averaged 11.5 points and 10.5 rebounds.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Shelita Burns, Jackson State.

Burns averaged 14.5 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, one steal and 0.5 blocks in a 65-53 loss to Alcorn State and a 54-40 win over Southern. She scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win over the Jaguars

Newcomer Of The Week: Candice Thomas, Prairie View A&M.

Thomas averaged 13 points, 3 rebounds, one assist and five steals per game in the Lady Panther 68-35 win over Texas Southern.
