HBCU Hoop Players Of The Week

NEW YORK– Here are this week’s HBCU men’s and women’s basketball players of the week as chosen by the four major black college conferences. (NOTE: All statistics are through Sunday’s games)

Men’s Honors

Co-Players Of The Week: Rome Sanders of Florida A&M and Morgan State’s Joseph McLean.

McLean averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 assists while shooting 75 percent from behind the arc in two conference victories for the Bears last week. The senior connected on 4-of-5 three-pointers and scored a season high 20 points with four assists at home against North Carolina A&T. He followed up that performance with 17 points, seven rebounds and matched his career high of seven assists in a victory against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Sanders shot 76 percent from the field last week to help the Rattlers defeat Howard and present Delaware State with their first conference loss of the season. In his top performance, Sanders recorded a double-double performance including 23 points and 11 rebounds while connecting on 10-of-13 baskets from the field against Howard.

Rookie Of The Week: Mike Freeman, Hampton.

Freeman recorded his third double-double performance of the year with 16 points and 15 rebounds in the Pirates’ win against non-conference opponent Longwood. The 15 rebounds tied an individual team record set in 2003. Freeman shot 73% from the field (11-of-15) and averaged 11 points and 9.5 rebounds to help the Pirates finish the week 1-1. This is Freeman’s third consecutive and fifth Rookie of the Week honor.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Tamieka Noel, Coppin State.

Noel averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals to lead the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week and improve to 8-0 in MEAC play. Noel shot 70 percent (14-of-20) from the field last week and recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Howard.

Rookie Of The Week: Shantar Waddell, North Carolina A&T.

Waddell averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals to lead the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 mark last week and improve to 8-0 in MEAC play. Noel shot 70 percent (14-of-20) from the field last week and recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Howard.

Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Gil Goodrich, Bowie State.

In two wins last week, Goodrich averaged 32.5 points and 9.5 assists. His best game came against Virginia Union when he scored 38 points and handed out eight assists as the Bulldogs advenged an earlier loss to VUU on January 23. It’s the third time this season he’s been named player of the week.

Rookie Of The Week: Jerry Hollis, Johnson C. Smith.

In three games, Hollis averaged 18.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks. His best game was a 23-point, seven rebounds, five blocks, and two steals performance in a win over Virginia Union. It’s the sixth time Hollis has been received rookie of the week honors.

Coach Of The Week: Anthony Collins, Virginia State.

Coach Collins and the Trojans are 14-3 and ranked third in the South Atlantic Regionand in first place in the CIAA Eastern Division.>

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Tenisha McArthur, Fayetteville State.

McArthur averaged 20.3 points per-game, 28 rebounds, 11 steals and 6 blocks during her three-game week. Her best performance was against Livingstone College where she scored 26 points, grabbed seven rebounds and five steals. She also added a double-double was against Saint Paul’s College.

Rookie Of The Week: Gabrielle Johnson, Saint Paul’s College.

In three games, Johnson averaged 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and four blocks. In her best effort of the season, Johnson amassed 21 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assists and 1 steals versus Fayetteville State on January 27.

Coach Of The Week: Jacques Curtis, Shaw.

The Lady Bears went 3-0 last week, winning games against Fayetteville State, Livingstone and Saint Paul’s College. The Lady Bears entered the week on a 6-game winning streak.

Men’s Honors

Co-Players Of The Week: Leslie Brown, Benedict and Paine’s Brian Harper.

Brown averaged 25.0 Points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals in wins over Miles and LeMoyne-Owen. His best game was a 30-point, five rebound, five assist performance against LeMoyne-Owen on January 27.

Harper averaged 15.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 blocked shots and 1.6 assists in three games. His best game was a 27-point, five rebound, five blocked shot performance against Miles on January 27.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Natasha Gray, Benedict.

Gray averaged 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and two blocked shots in wins over Miles and LeMoyne-Owen. Her best game was a 16-point, five steal, four blocked shot performance against LeMoyne-Owen on January 27.

Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Deforrest Riley-Smith, Southern

In his only game of the week, Riley-Smith scored 30 points while pulling down 11 rebounds, handing out four assists and gathering three steals.

Newcomer Of The Week: Brian Ezeh, Prairie View A&M.

In two games, Ezeh averaged 11 points, 5.5 rebounds, an assist, 0.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Sanora Cole, Grambling State.

Cole averaged 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assist and 3.5 steals in victories over UAPB and Mississippi Valley. She posted double-double against UAPB (26pts, 11rebs.) and recorded seven steals against MVSU.

Newcomer Of The Week: LaSharee Christian, Jackson State.

Christian averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebs, 5.5 assist and four steals per game in the Lady Tigers wins over MVSU and UAPB. She recorded six assist and five steals against Miss Valley and scored 19 points and five assist gainst the Lady Lions.
