HBCU Hoop Players Of The Week

NEW YORK — Here are this week’s HBCU men’s and women’s basketball players of the week as chosen by the four major black college conferences. (NOTE: All statistics are through Sunday’s games)


Men’s Honors

Player of The Week: Rashad West, Hampton.

West averaged 29 points and 4.5 rebound while shooting 50 percent from the field as the Pirates finished the week 1-1 among MEAC conference opponents. His best efforts came against the Florida A&M Rattlers as West scored a career-high 33 points including five three-point baskets to end the Rattlers undefeated conference record. Against Morgan State, West registered his fourth 20-point game of the season and added five rebounds and three steals in the Pirates disappointing overtime loss.

Rookie Of The Week: Mike Freeman, Hampton.

Freeman averaged 17 points and 11.5 rebounds after posting back-to-back double-double performances last week against Florida A&M and Morgan State. Against the Rattlers he scored 14 points and grabbed 12 boards (eight offensive) for his first career-double double. He returned the next game to register 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Pirates home loss to Morgan State. This is Freeman’s third Rookie of the Week honor.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Tristan McCray, Bethune-Cookman.

McCray posted 35 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists and eight steals, helping Bethune-Cookman to a 2-1 mark last week. McCray averaged 42 percent from the field (14-of-33) and 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the arc. She recorded her first double-double of the year and second of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a conference win over Norfolk State.

Co-Rookies Of The Week: Morgan State’s Corin Adams and UMES’ April McBride.

Adams averaged 16.5 points, six rebounds and three assists, while leading the Bears to a 2-0 mark last week. She totaled 13 points, including the game winner against Delaware State to give the Bears their first conference win of the season. Adams followed that performance by scoring eight of Morgan State’s 10 points in overtime and finishing with a game and career-high 20 points against Hampton.

McBride averaged 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals, helping the Hawks to a 2-0 record. McBride was 5-of-6 from the field for 12 points and nine rebounds in a conference win against South Carolina State. She earned her second double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds in a non-conference win against Winston-Salem State.


Men’s Honors

Player of the Week: Gil Goodrich, Bowie State

In two games, Goodrich shot 20-42 FGs, 12-25 3FGs, 10-12 FTs, 71 points (35.5 ppg), 9 rebounds (4.5 rpg.) (0 off., 9 def.), 15 assists (7.5 apg.), 10 steals (5 spg.), His best game: was against Fayetteville State (1/11/07) where he collected 35 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Note: Goodrich averaged 35.5 points and 7.5 assists in the Bulldogs two wins this week.

Rookie Of The Week: Jerry Hollis, J.C. Smith.

This week, Hollis collected 7-13 FGs, 0-2 FTs, 5 rebounds (1 off., 4 def.), 14 points, 1 block, 1 assist and 1 steal. Against Fayetteville State, he had 14 points and 5 rebounds against FSU.

Coach of The Week: James Stinson, Livingstone.

Livingstone broke a three-game losing streak that dates back to December 2, with a huge 55-53 win over Elizabeth City State. In the first meeting against the Vikings, the Blue Bears lost 73-61.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Celeste Trahan, Elizabeth City.

In two games, Trahan went 16-28 FG, 6-11 FT, 19 rebounds (9 rpg.) (9 off., 10 def.), 38 points (19 ppg.), 1 assist, 6 steals, 4 blocks. Her best game was against Shaw when she collected 21 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 1 assist in a decisive 87-62 road win over Shaw. Her performance against Shaw in Raleigh helped ECSU hand the Lady Bears their first home loss in four seasons.

Rookie Of The Week: Jasmine Newkirk, N.C. Central.

In three games, Newkirk went 17-39 FG, 7-17 3FG, 2-4 FT, 17 rebounds (5.7 rpg), 43 points (14.3 ppg), 15 assists (5.0 apg), 3 steals. Her best game was at Shaw (Jan. 11, 2007). She collected 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in a road win over the Lady Bears.

Coach of The Week: Vanessa Taylor, J.C. Smith.

Coach Taylor earned her 100th career victory at JCSU in a 74-58 win over divisional foe Fayetteville State.


Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Kenny Jones, Kentucky State.

Jones averaged 23.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists and one blocked shot in three games for the Thorobreds.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Bianca Burton, Stillman.

Burton scored 12 points, grabbed 11 rebounds with three steals and a blocked shot in the Lady Tigers only game this week.

SWAC Men’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Jacques Jones, Texas Southern.

Over two games, Jones led his team in scoring. He’s averaging 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks.

Newcomer Of The Week: Trant Simpson, Alabama A&M.

In his only game this week, the freshman guard had 18 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Women’s Honors

Player Of The Week: Shelita Burns, Jackson State.

Burns averaged 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks per game. She also had two consecutive double-double performances in the Lady Tigers wins over Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M

Newcomer Of The Week: LaSharee Christian, Jackson State.

Christian averaged 17 points, 2.5 rebounds, six assist and 3.5 steals per game. She had two consecutive double-digits scoring performances in JSU’s 57-38 win over Texas Southern and 75-71 victory over Prairie View A&M
