USA will be in the thick of it. There is a feeling but not a certainty Team USA will survive the First Round and “possibly” be a Contender ( wishful thinking ?? ). 4 years ago in 2002 USA made it all the way to the Quarter Finals but as far as USA goes this time it will be with a record 5 African American players on the Team.

One of them a Pope !

Eddie Pope of

North Carolina

African American in every sense of the word. He really talks the Talk. Walks the Walk. Puts his own money where his mouth is. This U.S. Defender grew up playing Soccer in North Point, North Carolina. He freely admits none of his friends did because ” most of the Black kids thought it was a white sport.” One more self fulfilling prophesy.

Now 32 Pope created his own effort back in 1998 the aptly Eddie Pope Foundation to assist and encourage Black kids in 2 communities that Pope favors High Point, North Carolina and Washington, DC where he stared in soccer. With an assist from Adidas the Foundation currently supplies equipment as well as instruction to about 350 kids. The Foundation is managed by Pope’s older sister Karen Pope an attorney.

Back to Eddie

Pope is a Soccer Pro through and through. Soccer has been and is his Life. Rising from his childhood love of soccer he went on to excel in the sport at the University of North Carolina and named NCAA First Team All American. Then from there to the Major League Soccer Draft and a very early selection by the DC United.

As soon as he arrived at the United he also began training for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. While that same year playing an instrumental role in the United becoming MLS Champions. The very next season Pope was named MLS Defender of the Year. As he continued to play for USA in international competition.

Pope has been selected 4 times for the MLS All Star Game and in 2000 named MLS Humanitarian of the Year an especially prestigious honor proving him a powerhouse on and off the Playing Field. In the 2002 World Cup veteran Eddie Pope played in all 5 U.S. Matches as the United States advanced to the Quarter Finals.

Back in the States the following year Pope was traded to the MetroStars and rose to become Captain of the team playing for the MetroStars as a key Defender. Traded again in 2004 Pope is currently with the Salt Lake City Real. In addition he has been named by MLS one of their All Time Best.
