Digging Deeper The Soriano Mess

Updated: April 19, 2006

Saturday’s Box will be found below Sunday’s as it was published late because of technical problems.

Yes we already

did One Box

last week

it may well Deserve

a Third

The Screwing of Alfonso Soriano

and what it says about Sports

What is most interesting and Scary about this Episode is all the people dumping on Soriano. For trying to prevent himself getting Stomped on. All those siding with the so called Washington Nationals for their undeniable lack of Integrity toward Alfonso Soriano. Made even Worse by the fact the so called Nationals are not owned by one of the unsavory greedy old men like George Steinbrenner who own most of the MLB franchises. No the DC franchise is owned by Baseball itself at this time as everyone knows.

What specifically

motives today’s Box is

an A _ _ H _ _ _

who the Washington Post employs

as a Sports Columnist

His name is Thomas Boswell. Now before any of you huff and Puff and and stomp out of the room. Our treatment of Boswell is exactly what he deserves. Comparable to his Assault on Soriano. Needless to say meant to send Alfonso a Message from the Washington Power Structure.

Don’t mess with US

well DC Trash

now you have to

Mess with US

Boswell in a lengthy piece Saturday in the Washington Post pretty much calls Soriano the most unsavory MLB player in all of history for not agreeing with the so called Nationals management – again which means Bid Selig and the Boys ultimately – to take one in the Head for the “team.”

Anyone reading Boswell’s Commentary and taking it at face value (sic) not taking a moment to digest his poison pen would almost believe Alfonso Soriano “criminal.” So anyone who faults us in return for labeling the Post’s Thomas Boswell an A _ _ H _ _ _ is Pathetic themselves.

And why most of All ?

Because if the same thing happened to Boswell or any of those who side with his views he and they would be outraged and fight their Fate every step of the way with every means they had.

Which leads to our other Charge

Thomas Boswell

And we will allow Boswell

to Hang Himself with his own words

How vicious is this Mr. Boswell

We quote …

“Or will Soriano refuse to report to left field and risk being fingered, perhaps for the rest of his career, as one of the most selfish players on record. Before Guillen’s injury, Soriano merely faced a decision. Now, if he chooses wrong, he faces a disaster. If he thinks his free agent value will go down after this season if he switches from second base to left field, then wait until he finds out how much his market price will drop if he refuses to trot to the outfield ”

We’d call that

Blackmail and a Threat

not Journalism at its Best

And what is Soriano’s “Crime” ??

For those of you who don’t remember the earlier Box from last week ( please see your physician for a battery of tests ) we will Summarize. All Star highly rated SECOND Baseman Alfonso Soriano was summarily traded in the off season by the Texas Rangers without Soriano’s agreement ( remind you of Slavery ) to another team the so called Nationals who made no secret of the fact that had NO intention of allowing SECOND Baseman Soriano to play SECOND Base.

Without even the decency or the logic of finding out if Soriano was willing to savage his well developed career by moving to a new position he had never played in his life – without any consultation or concern about Soriano the so called Nationals “purchased” Soriano. Sound like a Slave Market ?

It is virtually unprecedented especially in the Modern Era for a MLB team to do that to an established player. Yes there are young players looking to break into the Majors and players at the end of their careers on the Skids who will accept anything to stay in the Bigs. And there are some players who have negotiated to move to a new position in return for a trade they want. Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees are an Example. Ironically at Soriano’s expense.

of a Star Player entering the Prime of his Career

traded and forced to play another Position

without any acceptance on his part

even worse to accommodate a lesser player

at his Position

And for Soriano standing up for himself, his career and his Dignity, Post Columnist Boswell literally savages Alfonso Soriano as though he were some low level thug or crack cocaine dealer. A nobody who should be grateful if the so called Nationals would even let him be the Clubhouse Boy.

And want to Bet Boswell would have

toned down his rhetoric if it

were a White player ??

Let’s hear some more from Thomas Boswell

in his own Words …

“If Soriano refuses to make the simplest of sacrifices for his team — a move from a fairly hard position to a fairly easy one — then it will be remembered with bitterness for many years inside the game. The point has now been reached where Soriano risks far more, in damage to his reputation and future market value, if he refuses to switch. And the Nats look like fools if they don’t insist, bluntly and without apology if necessary, that he do his job.”

And this …

“As Soriano makes his decision in the next couple of weeks, perhaps he should consider this thought. Long after you are retired, you don’t want to look up the word “selfish” in the baseball dictionary and see your own face next to the definition.”

Now here is where we really Expose

Boswell and those who Agree

with his Venom

Ready …

What do you think Mr. Boswell would do if The Washington Post and without a word to Boswell summarily decided to sell his contract to let’s say The Los Angeles Times and sent him packing to the West Coast.

Then when Boswell arrives in LA ….

The publisher and editor of the LA Times tell Boswell they already have too many Sports Columnist but they do have a need for a Science Reporter and that is what Thomas Boswell will write at the LA Times. Science.

Before you say that could never happen

It’s Illegal

well you already got our First Point

But let’s say anyway it isn’t

that it’s like Baseball

Do you think for a moment Boswell OR you would put up with that Outrage. Taking your love and your career away from you to satisfy some corporation and having so little regard for Boswell OR you that they do not even consult with Boswell OR you. That they couldn’t care less what Boswell OR you think. And to make it even more Insulting Boswell OR you know and have the record to prove you are better than the other Times Sports Columnists.

So it comes down to this

Thomas Boswell brutally savages, assaults Alfonso Soriano with his Rhetoric Saturday with Abandon for the very same situation were the Tables turned Thomas Boswell would NEVER put up with himself.

Now you know why

Thomas Boswell is

what he is

And Thank God

if you aren’t

Alfonso stand up for your Rights

Defend your Dignity

it’s about more than Sports

it’s the the Abuse of Power

with implications for

All of Us

We are You

You are We

We are One

March 4, 1999

may still seem

a date of no special note

to many

Not Here At

Black Athlete Sports Network

It’s our Anniversary !

This day 7 years ago Roland Rogers, CEO of BASN, and a friend and colleague, spoke by phone as they often did, one at the northern the other at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, and before that long Conversation had come to its Conclusion they had gone on line and registered a name

And agreed to form a Venture dedicated to Sports but unlike any other by Africans Americans for African Americans and for everyone interested in a uniquely African American perspective on the religion of our days Sports.

It has been a Rough Ride

so far

but still Rewarding

BASN averages 100,000 unique visitors a month, millions of page views and a very loyal core audience. We have done this without a drop of advertising or marketing, and no significant coverage in other media nor the benefits of many linked Sites.

We have an extraordinary robust business plan that we have not been able to implement yet, and a growing fraternity of writers who supply content with varying amounts of frequency. We have a regular flow of comment from readers, and our unfair share of hate emails for having the audacity to confront the conventional view of sports in America as Color Neutral.

We have published our share of groundbreaking material and covered many topics and athletes in ways the mostly white media is not interested in doing or genetically incapable of doing. We have a series of Special Reports which are kept on our Front Page we challenge anyone to match.

Most of all our coverage of Sports is anchored in a view of Reality in which Sports is an inherent reflection of the Wider Society. Even more in our view that in many instances the best way to understand life in America is to view it through the Prism of Sports. Black Sports in America.

In doing so time and again we expound upon what we believe is a virulent 21st century definition of Racism in America which is ever so clearly seen in American Sports. For those who want to believe the word “racism” is really mostly something from the past when it was Blatant …..

BASN forces readers to deal with the fact Racism lives. A new form of Racism. Racism by Exclusion. Racism by Neglect. And it is undeniable in American sports. We just saw it written Large in the Winter Olympics in which a “record” (sic) 6 African Americans were among 211 white American Olympians.

And except for one Shani Davis they were each Invisible.

And to jolt you a little more NO African American has ever competed in the majority of Olympic Sports not only Winter but Summer as well. Why ? No there are NO ( or few ) open aggressive Racists controlling Olympic Sports in America. But every bit as effectively there are a group of important white men and women who see nothing Wrong when they face their teams of athletes in sport after sport and don’t see any African Americans among them.

And do Nothing about it.

that is Racism

no doubt about it

21st century style

Racism that leaves no fingerprints !

Racism that the practitioners

do not admit to

It is the exact same formula in all the major sports as well in the college and especially the pro ranks. Baseball, football and basketball. There are major aspects of all three in which you will find very limited or no African American involvement at all. Especially off the Field. In management and ownership.

Where the Biggest Scam of All

is the response

” but we can’t find Qualified African Americans ”

21st Century Racism

in Sports

We chose as our graphic for the Box for this special day a rather counter-intuitive image. The cover of the current issue of National Geographic. A publication and an issue that has absolutely nothing directly to do about Sports.

Rather the cover story is the latest version of the evidence that traces ALL human life back to Africa. It is beyond any dispute at all we are ALL African. Africa is the Birthplace of our Human Species. No doubt about it.

And how ironic it is that ALL our ancestors began as Black skinned humans only to find over hundreds of thousands of years of colonizing the entire Globe and skin pigmentation changes in response to environmental conditions that our original ancestors and their still Black skinned descendants are the most oppressed and Africa the most scourged and ravaged part of the Earth.

And that everywhere

throughout History

The Color of Nobility Black has been used to enslave and destroy countless millions because of the Color of their Black skin. Nothing more than that. That in the imperfection which is the Human Condition we as a group look to find the most obvious trait that can make us “different” and the basis for exploiting others.

It is ultimately defined by Greed

the fatal flaw in the human psyche

which leads us to find “justification”

for taking from some to give to others

because of the Color of their Skin

Specific to our American society while Plantation Slavery is long banished the human imperative that motivated it is not. More for us less for them. It is the Mantra of the Elites. Here at Black Athlete Sports Network we are not Deaf to the fact that the 21st century manifests that inequality and specifically in Sports.

Maybe that will make you appreciate

BASN’s motto

The Soul of Sports

So after 7 years of existence and a growing number of years of continuous daily publication we are Proud of the fact we are playing with the Big Boys and often overwhelming their very limited perspective on Sports and Society, and their lack of understanding of the African American Experience of Sports.

Many of our articles are “straight” sports without any specific overtones but written by African Americans in almost all cases. You see. We are a private sector profit oriented ( if not realized yet ) enterprise in the best American tradition, and our business is Sports and to be entertaining to our Audience.

First and foremost

what separates us

is a Core and a Foundation

based on the reality of

The American Experience

past present and future

that other Sports media

Watch us Grow

Be part of the Journey

Happy Anniversary
