Rams Make It Look Easy in Their First Round Game

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston Salem State University Rams jumped on the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College Early and often en route to an easy and record-setting win crushing the Tigers 74-38, Wednesday evening in opening round action of the 61st annual CIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, NC. The Rams will now face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University in a quarterfinal game Thursday.

The Tigers were really never in the game thanks to horrific shooting and turnovers. The Tigers shot only 30 percent from the floor, an embarrassing 12 percent from the 3 point line and only shot 56 percent from the free throw line. They couldnt buy a basket. The Tigers also didnt take care of the ball with numerous turnovers leading to easy points for the Rams. The Rams outscored the Tigers 21-3 in the points off of turnovers category for the game.

The Rams jumped out to a 7-1 with Alleggrie Guinn knocking down 1 of 2 free throws with 16:26 remaining in the first half. After the nice start by the Rams, both teams scored 7 points making the score 14-8 with just over 12 minutes remaining. WSSU didnt shoot well in the first half but made enough shots to go on a 12-3 run to take a 15 point lead at 26-11 with 8:47 remaining in the opening half. The Rams shot only 43 percent from the floor and only 33 percent from behind the arc in the first half. The lead ballooned to 18 points after two free throws by the Rams Alleggrie Guinn making the score 39-21 with 3:05 remaining in the opening stanza. The teams traded baskets the rest of the half with the Rams taking a commanding 44-28 lead into halftime.

The Rams begin the second half like the first half scoring fast and furious. WSSU got off to a 8-3 run to start the half ending the run on a basket and foul by Alleggrie Guinn making the score 52-31 with 15:20 to play in the game. WSSU kept the pressure on offensively and the Tigers continued to shoot poorly leading to a 30 point lead when Audly Wehner made a layup with an assist from Alleggrie Guinn making the score a commanding 65-35 with 9:11 to play in this blowout game.

The teams then went about 2 minutes without scoring a point until Corey Parker drained a 3 pointer with 1:22 left in the game making the score 72-37. After the Rams Corey Parker made a layup, the Tigers Marcus Mitchell close out the scoring for the game making 1 of 2 free throws and making the final score 74-38.

The Rams were led in scoring by Alleggrie Guinn with 17 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assist, Audly Wehner, who had 15 points to go with 8 rebounds, 11 points and 5 rebounds from behind the arc and Darrell Wonge with 10 points and 5 assist. The Tigers were led by Bruce Royal with 10 points and 3 assist. The only Tiger in double figures for the game.

The Rams will return to action on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 1:00 pm when they face the CIAA Eastern Division’s second-seeded Bulldogs of Bowie State University at the Charlotte Bobcat Arena;
