High Expectations for Charde Houston

Houston, from San Diego, California, was one of the leading scorers in the nation as a high school senior. She was recruited by every program. She chose UConn because of the National Championships, coach Geno Auriemma and the player atmosphere. She hasn’t regretted it for a second.
But Houston is enigmatic. The sophomore was picked as a first team All American by many national publications. She had a great game in an upset win earlier in the season against LSU.But after that she had many poor outings including a 0 point performance against West Virginia in the Big East final.A game that UConn almost lost. She played terribly in the two losses to Rutgers.
The forward averaged only 9.8 ppg on a team with only one legitimate scorer in Ann Strother. Her rebounds at 5.0 and her mpg at 16.9 were also below expectations. She did not even make all Big East. And that was no snub.
Houston enters the NCAA tourney with a burden on her shoulders.Coach Auriemma is already on record as saying this his team can’t win a National Championship without Houston performing at a much higher level. And she knows that.UConn is all about winning National Championships.Houston didn’t come there to get knocked out in the Elite 8 and that is what many forecast this year for the Huskies.
Mel Thomas has turned into a great scorer and Strother is Strother. But for UConn to make a run and most likely to beat Duke in Bridgeport and advance to Boston it needs production on all levels from Houston. And she knows that better than anyone.Look for her to really step up her game when it counts.
