PVU Team More Confident
HOUSTON — The Prairie View Panthers are entering the 2005 football season full of confidence and zest. They no longer expect to lose, but expect they can win.
“I feel like our team is beginning to realize that we can compete against the best teams in the conference,” said PVU coach Henry Frazier who was behind 3-0 at halftime against Southern. “After the loss to Southern (38-0), our players were very upset.” Last year, I felt our players expected to lose to Southern.”
Frazier also realizes that his Panthers are playing against some Tigers that are meaner and more talented than the Southern Jaguars they played two weeks ago.
“Grambling is a good football team and they have their quarterback (Bruce Eugene) back,” said Frazier. “Eugene is one of the top quarterbacks in the country and we must contain their passing game.”
Last year Grambling was led by freshman quarterback Brandon Landers who passed for 384 yards to lead the Tigers over the Panthers for the 18th straight time.
In the last 41-years, PVU has won only four games and one tie. Their last win was in 1986, 24-10. The other wins were, 24-14 in 1964 when Otis Taylor, Jim Kearney and Ken Houston lead the Panthers. The Panthers won 2-0 in 1975 and 1976 on forfeits. They tied, 10-10 in 1966 when Uriel “Sloppy Joe” Johnson led the Panthers.
Prairie View is no longer the doormat in all of SWAC categories. All-Conference punter Eric Hernandez leads the conference in punting and is one of the best in 1-AA.
QB Michael Hill from La Marque will again lead the Panthers offense. Hill is 7th in the conference with 97.0 passing yards per game. Hill’s go-to- guy is WR Marvin Howard who has caught 7 passes for 129 yards. Running back Arnell Fontenot is among the top 10 rushers in the conference.
Grambling is led by quarterback Bruce Eugene who averages 236.0 yards per game for 4th place in the conference. His go to guy is WR Henry Tolbert who has caught 7 passes for 209 yards.
