Rwandan Marathon for Peace Attracts 2000 World Athletes

KIGALI, — A total of 2000 athletes are expected to take part in the International Marathon for Peace slated for this Sunday, at Amahoro National Stadium, organizers said here Saturday .

According to organizers, the race will be divided in three distances; marathon 42.195km, half marathon 21.97km and the short race of 5km.

Kigali joins other big African, American and European cities inhosting the race, which is aimed at promoting awareness of the process of reconciliation among the Rwandan people, education for Young People for Peace, openness to international relationships, strengthening the culture of peace and to develop sports among others.

The other objectives for the event are to promote the culture of peace in the region and worldwide, promote tourism in Rwanda, Rwandan minister of sports and culture Joseph Habineza said.

Participants are drawn from 10 European countries, United States, Canada, Australia plus others from more than 10 African states including Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.

Eleven years after Rwanda experienced the horrible genocide in which close to a million lives were decimated, the government and Soroptimist International have jointly organized the Marathon for Peace. Enditem
