Rams Continue Their Dominance Over Livingstone College/ Beat Them 62-57 To Win Their Eighth Straight

Winston-Salem, NC -The WSSU Rams continued their stellar play by defeating The Livingstone College Blue Bears for the 12th straight time 62-57 and winning their 8th consecutive game Thursday night at the C.E. Gaines center. The win was even more impressive considering the Rams played the game without the services of All-CIAA forward Audly Wehner who sat out the game with an ankle sprain.

The game didn’t start very promosing for the Rams as they fell behind 5-1 to the Blue Bears after only just over 2 minutes into the game with a jump shot and a three pointer to start the game.

The quick start and lead for Livingstone College was short lived and seemed to motivate and awaken the Rams as they would go on to score 26 of the next 40 points over the next ten minutes and led 27-19 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. The two teams would then trade basket for the most part and the Rams took a 37-32 half time lead into the locker room.

The Rams began the second half outscoring the Blue Bears 15-5 and led 52-37 with just over 13 minutes remaining. Although it looked as though the Rams would coast to the win with only 13 minutes to play and a 15-point lead, the Blue Bears had other ideas.

The Blue Bears climbed back into the game with good execution, defense and the Rams turning the ball over. The Rams turned the ball over three times that resulted in the Blue Bears cutting the Rams lead to five points with 1:15 to play.

The Rams would once again need to put a team away by hitting free throws to “seal the deal” against the Blue Bears and they were cool and clutch at the line narrowly escaping with a win but a win it was in front of a sold-out and very happy crowd.

The Rams were led by Alleggrie Guinn who scored a team-high 13 points. He was joined in double figures by Darnell Gregory and Terris Sifford who each scored 10 points.

Livingstone was led by Olufemi Abiodun who had a team high ten points in the loss. He was the only Blue Bear to score in double-digits.

With the win, the Rams move to 17-5 overall (10-1 CIAA, 5-1 CIAA West) while the Blue Bears fall to 14-9 overall (6-6 CIAA, 2-4 CIAA West) with the loss. The Rams are atop of the CIAA’s Western Division with five games remaining in the regular season.

WSSU returns to action on Saturday evening at LJVM Coliseum at 8:00 pm as they play host to the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University as the two regionally-ranked teams will do battle for the second and final time of the regular season.

The Lady Rams used solid defense in the second half to open up their largest lead of the game with 14:04 remaining in the second half and led 41-34.

The Lady Blue Bears would answer and would regain the lead, as they used a 6-0 run late in the game to pull ahead of the Lady Rams again.

Thanks to Shalonda Carter however, the Rams would prevail as she took over with back-to-back field goals, including a fast break lay-up that gave the Rams a slim two-point lead at 55-53 with only 26 seconds remaining.

Finally, when Kadina Baldwin stole Livingstone’s inbound pass with three seconds to play in the game, The seven game losing streak was finally over.
