GRAMBLING, La. — The first item on the agenda for new Grambling State athletics director Willie Jeffries is hiring a permanent football coach.

“When I get started, we’ll begin right away getting applications,” said Jeffries, who was confirmed by the University of Louisiana System’s board of supervisors on Friday. “Time is of the essence for getting somebody onboard.”

Jeffries previously coached at South Carolina State, Howard and Wichita State, and has also served as athletics director and director of athletic fund raising over the years.

But Jeffries did not conduct interviews for a football coach during a two-year stint as AD, since he held both positions. Still, Jeffries said he had experience in selecting other coaches.

“I did that when I was athletics director at South Carolina State,” he said. “It takes a special kind of skill, especially at a school with the history of Grambling.”

Indeed, Jeffries steps into a complicated situation with GSU’s bellwether sport.

Former offensive coordinator and and assistant head coach Melvin Spears has served in an interim capacity since the departure of Doug Williams in February.
