Ricky Shields plays in a high profile Conference and he was showcased on national tv in the NIT semis and finals against Michigan last year in the Spring, but I bet that you have still never heard of him.Well listen up.He may be a future NBAer.
Shields is a 6-4,190 pound shooting guard for coach Gary Waters of Rutgers and the Big East Conference.
Shields had such a good season last year that he even flirted with the NBA draft. But fortunately for the Scarlet Knights,he pulled his name out well in advance.Shields is being touted as one of the top 4 shooting guards in Conference and a possible late first round pick in the 2005 NBA draft.
The Rutgers star was not highly recruited out of Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia and was a diamond in the rough pluck for the Knights.Coach Gary Waters has developed him into a star. And that has been Waters’ specialty at both Kent State and Rutgers.Developing underrecruited players into solid Conference stars.
Shields had a phenomenal game last season against West Virginia, scoring 25 points on 8-11 shooting and 5-5 from three point land.He and fellow backcourt mate Quincy Douby specialize in NBA treys. They may both be shooting them some day for pay.
Shields only regret thus far at RU is that he has not been to the NCAA Tourney.Close last year, but no cigar. This year could be different with the best backcourt in Conference coming back and a trio of solid frosh entering the picture for Waters.
Only time will tell, but Shields may end up playing not only in the NCAA Tourney in March, but also the NBA in the Fall of 2005.He certainly shoots well enough. And his handle is improving.
