MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY FOOTBALL HONORS Hampton Garners Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hampton Quarterback Princeton Shepherd and Linebacker Justin Durant were named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week respectively, the league announced. Morgan State’s Larry Dixon earned Rookie of the Week, Howard’s Brandon Torrey was named offensive lineman of the week, while Bethune-Cookman’s Davis Player picked up special teams player of the week honors.

Shepherd (6-5, 205, Jr., Columbia, S.C.) accounted for 294 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in leading the Pirates to a 49-37 win over Morgan State. The junior signal caller passed for a career-high 260 yards, tossing touchdowns of 65 and 41 yards, while also running for a 17-yard score in just three quarters of action.

Durant (6-2, 235, So., Florence, S.C.) recorded 13 tackles (7 solo) and intercepted two passes, returning one 25 yards for a touchdown to help Hampton to its victory over Morgan State.

Dixon (WR, 6-1, 180, R-Fr., Baltimore, Md.) pounced on a punt block in the end zone for his first career touchdown in the New York Urban League Classic against Hampton. Dixon also recorded a 30-yard touchdown reception in the game.

Torrey (OL, 6-6, 280, Sr., Durham, N.C.) was the key to Howard having two runners rush for over 100 yards and a season-high 496 yards of total offense in a win over Savannah State. Torrey had three pancake blocks and graded out at 98 percent.

Player (P, 5-10, 186, Jr., Ormond-By-The-Sea, Fla.) booted four punts for a total of 197 yards and a 49.2 average, including a 74 yard punt that landed on the three yard line. Player also placed three of his four punts inside the 20 yard line as the Wildcats defeated Norfolk State 43-3.
