Ryan Gomes

CONNECTICUT—Connecticut,Syracuse and Notre Dame are sure bets for the NCAA Tourney next march. The Big East bubble teams appear to be Boston College,Providence,Rutgers and Seton Hall.

The only reason that Tim Welsh’s Providence team falls into this lofty company is one Ryan Gomes.the 6-7 240 pound forward may be the best player in the country and was hardly recruited out of high school in waterbury,Connecticut.UConn didn’t even take a look and that fact led to probably the only Jim Calhoun tirade last season after his eventual National Champions fell to the Friars at UConn.Well, actually fell to Gomes and a cast of 4.
It took a monumental selling job on the phone by Gomes’ AAU coach and Welsh friend,Wayne Simone to even get the Friars interested in the then frail Gomes. It was the best phone call Welsh has ever fielded.
Last season Gomes was a First team All-American and flirted with the idea of entering the NBA draft. He was talked out of it because of the draft’s depth at power forward.Welsh is happy about that decision.
Last season.Gomes scored 20 or more points 14 times and had 10 or more rebounds 15 times. He has 13 double-doubles for the Friars.
Gomes led Providence to a 20-9 mark last season and a national ranking at one point of 12,their best showing in 25 seasons.
Look for Gomes to lead the Friars to another NCAA bid and to be a lottery pick in the 2005 NBA draft. He is that good and really has only touched on his true potential as a scorer and rebounder.
